What Is Soft Roading?
Share
If you’ve noticed more people turning their everyday SUVs/vans into weekend car camping rigs, you’re not wrong.
There’s a shift happening in the outdoor world—and it’s called soft roading.
It’s simpler, more accessible, and pairs perfectly with one of the fastest-growing trends right now: using a car sleeping platform to turn your vehicle into a comfortable place to sleep.
Let’s break it down.
What Is Soft Roading?
Soft roading focuses on easy-access dirt roads, scenic campsites, and minimal setups rather than hardcore off-roading.
No crazy rock crawling. No $50k rig.
You’re just taking your daily driver off the beaten path to unlock better views, quieter campsites, and more freedom.
Think:
- Forest service roads
- Gravel mountain passes
- Lakeside pull-offs
- Desert viewpoints
Soft roading is less about the challenge and more about the destination + experience.
Why Soft Roading Is Exploding
The old version of “overlanding” requires:
- Heavy vehicle modifications
- Expensive gear
- A ton of time
Soft roading flips that on it's head.
- Quick weekend trips
- Minimal setup
- Gear that works with their daily driver
And most importantly—they want comfort.
The Rise of the Car Sleeping Platform

Sleeping inside your vehicle used to mean:
- Folding seats down awkwardly
- Uneven surfaces
- Limited storage
- Not a great night of sleep
Car sleeping platforms change everything.
It creates:
- A flat, stable sleeping surface
- Dedicated storage space underneath
- A clean, organized setup
- A fast, repeatable system
Instead of “making it work,” you’re actually building a comfortable mobile basecamp.

Where Hele Box Fits In
At Hele Outdoors, we built the Hele Box specifically for this shift.
Why?
Most people don’t want a permanent build. They want flexibility!
The Hele Box is a modular car sleeping platform designed to:
- Install in minutes
- Work with your everyday vehicle
- Pack down when you don’t need it
- Create usable storage without sacrificing space
The Hele Box is built from lightweight aerospace aluminum, it’s strong enough for real use—but adaptable enough for real life.
No commitment. No complexity. No bulky wooden systems or rooftop tent

Soft Roading vs. Traditional Overlanding
Soft roading is redefining what adventure looks like.
Soft Roading
- Easy dirt roads
- Stock or lightly modified vehicles
- Quick trips
- Comfort-focused
Traditional Overlanding
- Technical terrain
- Heavily modified rigs
- Long expeditions
- Survival-focused
For most people, soft roading just makes more sense.
The Future of Car Camping
Soft roading isn’t a trend—it’s a shift.
People are realizing:
- You don’t need more gear
- You don’t need a bigger build
- You just need a smarter setup
Soft roading makes adventure accessible again.
It’s about getting outside more often and using what you already have.
And with the right car sleeping platform, your vehicle becomes more than just transportation—it becomes part of the experience.

I have a 2024 Subie Forester. I’m looking forward to pursuing this way of car camping at 68 yo. It appears simple, practical, and easy to install. I have all the gear I need, only need the sleeping platform and I am on the road.
