Telluride

Favorite Town for Car Camping

I’ve been taking car camping trips for the last 4 years in various states across the country.

When it comes to camping in your car, some towns are more accommodating than others.

This town in particular is so cool because you don't need a stealth sleeping platform or set up to make it happen.

Telluride

One of the most sought after destinations in Colorado is surprisingly accommodating to the car camping scene.

Car camping in the Telluride itself might not be recommended without a stealth in vehicle sleeping platform set up.

Please don’t pop your rooftop tent on mainstreet.

The reason Telluride makes it to the top of the list is thanks to the vast public lands and trails that are adjacent to this legendary town.

Last Dollar Road is an easy trail for most AWD/4WD vehicles with decent clearance while more difficult trails like Imogene & Blackbear will require a properly built rig.

Use ioverlander or TrailsOffroad to explore trails and campsites that you are comfortable reaching in your vehicle.

The camping in this area is breathtaking, and allows you to save thousands of dollars by skipping out on the overpriced air bnbs or hotels.

The views are so amazing, you'd be missing out in a bnb anyways!

If you are going with a friend, leave one of your vehicles at your campsite to “hold it” and jump in your colleague's vehicle to drive into town.

This way you don’t have to worry about finding a spot in the dark.

It helps if your friend’s set up is built in the vehicle like the Hele Box sleeping platform so they don’t need to fiddle around with a rooftop tent once you get back to camp.

Have you had a particularly epic experience sleeping in your vehicle at a Colorado town? Let us know where any why - we’ll add it to the list!
